The DWCPA, in conjunction with NextEnergy, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, and the University of Michigan School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, is researching and developing a way to use the Detroit River to generate energy. Vortex Hydro Energy LLC is a company commercialized by the University of Michigan to advance patented technology developed by one of its professors, Dr. Michael Bernitsas. All partners are looking for ways to incorporate the technology into the DWCPA’s new Public Dock & Terminal project. If successful, it’s believe that this technology could be marketed worldwide to help contribute toward global energy shortages.
