U.S. EPA Awards Port Authority Funding

CHICAGO (April 8th, 2008) – The U.S. EPA announced that the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority (DWCPA) has received another round of grant funds totaling $400,000 for its Brownfield Redevelopment Program. Collaborative stakeholders of the DWCPA program include its governing units, including the City of Detroit, Department of Environmental Affairs, and the Wayne County, Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, and community input from Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision.

The DWCPA has now received $1.2 million over the past six years from the EPA for redeveloping brownfield sites throughout Detroit and Wayne County. The grant funds have provided the DWCPA with additional federal resources in its effort to market and attract investment toward the Port of Detroit, in order to sustain increased growth and commerce. However, due to the effectiveness of the program, and with strong collaboration from the City of Detroit and Wayne County, funds are being invested off the waterfront and into the community to assist with neighborhood revitalization and commercial investment. To date, the DWCPA Brownfield Program has leveraged over $400 million in private investment and over 680 jobs.
