Welcome to The Port of DetroitYou have found Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority’s temporary website. We are excited to share with you our newly refreshed website which will be unveiled in 2012. As Executive Director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, I’m happy to say that despite all of our challenging times, the DWCPA continues to make progress on important projects and initiatives that we feel can have a positive impact on the entire region. As you may or may not be aware, we recently opened our new terminal and dock facility on our new beautiful Detroit Riverwalk along the Detroit River located right next to the General Motors World Headquarters. We are proud to say that our terminal and dock has already been visited by Great Lakes cruise ships and tall ships. We envision these visits to substantially increase in the coming years. The Port of Detroit has a fascinating history that began with Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. Explorer Cadillac first founded Detroit in 1701, as a fur trading port, when he planted the flag of France at the foot of what is now Griswold Street. In 1749, concerted efforts began to strengthen and develop Detroit as the economic and political center of the region. Today, the Port of Detroit continues to play a significant and very positive role in our local and State economy. Our port is recognized as Michigan’s only true deep-water international port. It is interesting to note that the Port of Detroit handles international cargo for manufacturing facilities and construction sites all over the State and operates one of the largest Foreign Trade Zones in the country. I invite you, on behalf of our Authority and Port constituents, to visit our web site again when it is soon completed. We are excited about its introduction as it will provide you with a wealth of pertinent information regarding the Port of Detroit. Sincerely, John JamianExecutive Director |
